Intent of Award: The Research & Development grants are intended to support projects that directly relate to the planning, implementation, delivery and evaluation of continuing education for health professionals. These funds may be used as pilot funding for further research in the area.
Examples might include innovative needs assessment and new methods of evaluation to measure the impact of continuing education activities on health professional competence, behaviour or health outcome. These projects should be aligned with the vision, mission and values of the Office of Continuing Education and Professional Development.
Review Criteria: Relevance and innovativeness of the research question, strength of problem statement and background, scientific merit of design and methodology, potential contribution of the finished work to the field of continuing education and dissemination strategy.

Expectations of Applicants Upon Completion: All successful applicants are (1) required to submit a brief report including justification of budget upon completion of the project due one year following completion, (2) required to give a 20-minute presentation at a Research in CE (RICE) group meeting, and (3) required to attend and present their research results at the annual Faculty of Medicine Spring Education Achievement Day at the University of Toronto within 18 months of completion of the project.

Application Outline: The grant application should be no longer than 10 single spaced pages including title page, references, budget and attachments (12 pt font, Times New Roman). The grant application, including attachments, should be submitted as a single PDF (.pdf) file.
Title Page: Must include: Project title, Principal Investigator's and Co-Investigator's name, title, institutional affiliation, address, phone number, fax number and e-mail address. The title page should also include the names, titles and institutional affiliations of other investigators.
Research Abstract: The abstract should summarize the proposal in 200 words or less and include Research proposal (Introduction & Purpose, Research Design & Methods, Proposed Project Schedule). The format for the CE research proposal should follow the structure outlined in the Application Form template.
All proposals should include the following:
- a statement of the research problem;
- a focused and relevant literature review;
- a description of the relevance of the project to continuing education;
- hypotheses;
- methodology (design, subjects, instrumentation, data analysis); and
- proposed project schedule.
References: Cited references shall follow the American Medical Association (AMA) format.
Budget: The budget should provide details of required equipment, supplies, services and salaries (if relevant). Note: The budget should NOT cover administrative surcharge or travel expenses for the purposes of disseminating the results of the study, nor should it cover any costs related to event funding.
Funding From Other Sources: Other sources of funding supporting the research proposal should be declared (e.g., University of Toronto departments, hospitals, research institutes, etc.). Matching funds are encouraged.
Ethical Concerns: There should also be an indication that the research proposal has been submitted for Institutional Review Board (IRB) review.
Supporting Documentation Required: A Letter of Endorsement of the Departmental Chair or designate (e.g., CE Director, etc.); a brief curriculum vitae for Principal Investigator (maximum 3 pages)
Dissemination of Project Results: The proposal should describe methods by which findings will be disseminated (e.g., conferences, presentations, rounds, manuscripts, publications, etc.). All recipients must prepare a poster for the annual spring Faculty of Medicine University of Toronto Education Achievement Day, and present at a RICE group meeting. All presentations should acknowledge funding through the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, Continuing Education Research & Development Award.
